  1. Former royal residence near Richmond, London,
  2. built 1515 by Cardinal Wolsey and presented
  3. by him to Henry VIII in 1525. Henry
  4. subsequently enlarged and improved it. In the
  5. 17th century William and Mary made it their
  6. main residence outside London, and the palace
  7. was further enlarged by Christopher Wren,
  8. although only part of his intended scheme was
  9. completed. The last monarch to live at
  10. Hampton Court was George II, who died in
  11. 1760. During his life many of the Tudor
  12. apartments were pulled down and replaced. The
  13. palace was opened to the public, free of
  14. charge, by Queen Victoria in 1838. Part of
  15. the building was extensively damaged by fire
  16. in 1986.
